The Toyota Tacoma is a midsize truck, available in three cab styles: Regular Cab, Access Cab (an extended cab with small rear-hinged doors) and Double Cab (crew cab with four full-size front-hinged doors). Regular and Access cabs come with 6-foot beds, while the Double Cab can be had with either a 5- or 6- foot bed. The 2012 Tacoma can seat up to five people in certain configurations. The competitors of 2012 Toyota Tacoma include Chevrolet Colorado, Nissan Frontier, Ford Ranger and Dodge Dakota.
All three Toyota Tacoma styles are offered in a choice of two- or four-wheel drive. Rear-wheel-drive PreRunner versions adopt the rugged look of their more off-road-capable siblings but without the added weight, reduced fuel economy and improved traction of actual four-wheel-drive versions. The X-Runner is a special high-performane of Tacoma, offering stiffer suspension, larger alloy wheels and summer tires for beter on-road performance, as well as a body treatment to match.
The Toyota Tacoma, still the best selling compact pickup truck in the U.S. market by a wide margin, offers a restyled exterior look and a redesigned, upgraded interior in all 2012 models. New changes add comfort, usability and audio/infotainment performance.
For 2012, Toyota Tacoma shows a fresh face with a redesigned hood, grille, headlamps and front bumper among other changes. The 2012 Toyota Tacoma interior gets a new look with a black high-contrast center console, switch plate covers, dash and upper door trim, while the SR5 grade features a new seat fabric design. Details that add up to more comfort and function include a larger, higher-resolution display for the available back-up camera, a new temperature gauge, available rear-view mirror with compass and HomeLink, vanity lamps added to sun visors, an additional overhead storage compartment and, on Access Cab models, a new rear-storage box.
For 2012, the Tacoma also takes a clear lead in the arena of in-car electronics, adding Toyota’s new Entune services to the option list. This includes Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, HD radio, satellite radio, text/e-mail reading, Pandora and iHeart Radio streaming and real-time traffic info.
The 2012 Toyota Tacoma is available with two engines. Most cofigurations come standard with a 2.7-liter Dual Overhead Cam (DOHC) four-cylinder engine that produces 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on Regular and Access Cab models while the PreRunner Double Cab gets a four-speed automatic. EPA fuel economy for this engine in a two-wheel-drive with automatic is 19 mpg city/ 24 mpg highway. With four-wheel-drive this engine is rated at 18 mpgcity and 21 mpg highway.
The second engine is an 4.0-liter DOHC V6 that provides 236 horsepower with 266 lb-ft of torque. This engine is standard on the four-wheel-drive Double Cab and X-Runner and available as an option on the Access Cab and Pre Runner Double Cab. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the V6, with a five-speed automatic available as an option. Epa estimates for two-wheel -drive with automatic in at 17 mpg city/ 21 mpg highway while the four-wheel-drive V6 is rated at 16 mpg city/ 21 mpg highway.
The well-equipped 4×2 Regular Cab model of 2012 Toyota Tacoma features standard air conditioning, a full-size spare tire, AM/FM CD four-speaker sound system, tachometer, digital clock, two instrument panel powerpoints with a lighter, dome lamp and rear mudguards. Regular Cab 4×4 models with the automatic transmission feature standard bucket seats. 2012 Tacoma Access Cab and Double Cab models add more standard features, including power windows and door locks, bucket seats and a center console.
